Short answer: a tandem paragliding flight in Kijabe costs around KSh 12,000 per person in 2026, which buys you 15–20 minutes of flying time off the Kijabe escarpment with a licensed pilot, a GoPro recording of the flight, and a return transfer from the launch site to the pickup point at the bottom of the valley. If you're budgeting a Nairobi day trip with paragliding as the headline activity, you should plan for closer to KSh 15,000–18,000 once fuel and lunch are factored in. Below is the honest breakdown so you can plan with no surprises.

What you actually pay for

The advertised tandem flight price covers four things: the pilot, the wing and harness, the launch and recovery logistics, and basic insurance for the activity itself. It does not cover transport from Nairobi to Kijabe (about 60 km, 90 minutes each way), park or community access fees on the escarpment, the videographer who walks down with you, or food. Pilots who fly out of Kijabe are KCAA-licensed and most carry an APPI (Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors) tandem rating — ask to see the card before you fly.

Why Kijabe and not Kerio Valley?

Kijabe sits 50 km north-west of Nairobi on the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley, with a take-off ridge at roughly 2,400 m and a landing zone about 600 m below. That gives you a long, smooth ridge soar with thermals lifting off the escarpment in the late morning. Kerio Valley near Eldoret has more dramatic descents and longer airtimes, but it's a 6-hour drive and at least a 2-night commitment. Kijabe works as a single day trip, which is why it's the default for first-time tandem paragliders in Kenya.

Best months to fly

The Kijabe paragliding season runs roughly December to March (dry, predictable thermals) and July to early October (drier, cooler — pilots' favourite). April–May (long rains) and November (short rains) usually see flights cancelled or postponed at the last minute. If your trip falls in the rainy season, ask whether the operator will reschedule for free or refund — reputable Kenyan operators do.

What the day looks like

A typical Nairobi-based tour pickup leaves around 7 am, gets you to the launch site by 9 am, briefs you for 20 minutes, and has you in the air by 10 am once the morning thermals build. After landing in the valley, you'll have lunch and head back to the city by 3 pm. Some operators bundle Kijabe paragliding with a Hells Gate cycling add-on or a Crescent Island walk on Lake Naivasha to make a fuller day out — budget another KSh 4,000–6,000 for the combo.

Who should and shouldn't fly

Tandem paragliding is open to almost everyone: minimum age is normally 8 (with parental consent), maximum weight is 100 kg, and there's no upper age limit if you can run a few steps for take-off. Pregnant women, people with a recent fracture, severe back pain, or uncontrolled high blood pressure should not fly. There is a real but small risk of motion sickness during the spirals at the end of the flight — tell your pilot in advance if you don't want them.

How to book paragliding in Kijabe

You can either book directly with a pilot in Kijabe (cheaper but you arrange your own transport, lunch and back-up plan) or book through a tour operator who bundles it. The bundled option is what we run at Xtreme Republic: pickup, fuel, gate fees, lunch, photos and the flight itself, all on one M-Pesa or card payment. See the Paragliding Experience tour page for the live 2026 price and to check availability for your date.

Three things to ask before you pay

  1. Is the pilot APPI tandem rated? Ask to see the card. Real ones are dated.
  2. What's your weather cancellation policy? The honest answer is “we reschedule, no charge.”
  3. Are gate and community fees in the price? If they're billed at the launch, you can lose KSh 1,000+ on the day.

FAQs

Is KSh 12,000 the cheapest paragliding price in Kenya?
Yes for tandem flights. Solo first-time courses are cheaper per session (around KSh 8,000) but you're tethered to a training hill, not flying off Kijabe.

How long is the actual flight?
Plan for 15–20 minutes of airtime. On a thermal-rich day a pilot can stay up for 30+ minutes at no extra cost — that's entirely down to the conditions.

Can I pay with M-Pesa?
Yes. Most Kenyan operators (us included) accept M-Pesa STK Push, Pesapal card, or bank transfer. Hand-cash to the pilot at launch is normal too, especially for tips.

Can I fly if I have glasses or a phone?
Glasses are fine. Phones must go in a zipped pocket — pilots do not let you film from your hand because dropped phones at 600 m have killed people on the ground in other countries.
