If you're trying to choose between The ONE Watamu Bay and Diamonds Malindi for a Kenyan coast holiday, this is the honest comparison — not a brochure. Both are 4-star beachfront resorts, both sit on Kenya's most-loved 60 km of coastline, both run all-inclusive plans, and both will be on every shortlist for 2026. They're different beasts though, and the right choice depends on three things: your group, your meal preference, and how much you want a working pool versus a wild beach.

The 30-second answer

The ONE Watamu Bay is the better value if you're a couple, a family with young kids, or a small group of friends who want a quieter beach, a shorter transfer from Malindi airport, and a rack rate that starts around KSh 9,000 per person half board.

Diamonds Malindi is the better value if you want full all-inclusive (drinks plus all meals), more daytime activity at the resort, and a livelier social scene in the evenings. Expect to pay closer to KSh 14,000–18,000 per person all-inclusive depending on season.

Same coastline. Different vibe. Both deliver the holiday they promise — you just need to know which is which.

Beach + setting

The Watamu side wins on water. The Watamu Marine National Park starts at the beach — you can walk in, snorkel a coral garden 80 m offshore and see octopus, parrotfish and turtles without paying for a boat. The lagoon is calm year-round because the reef breaks the swell.

Malindi has a longer, more open beach. You get genuine surf in some seasons, more space to walk, and beach vendors selling pareos and fruit. Snorkelling is mostly done by boat trip 20 minutes south at Malindi Marine Park.

If you bring a snorkel mask in the suitcase: Watamu. If you're a beach walker who likes a long sandy run: Malindi.

Rooms

The ONE Watamu Bay has three room categories: Garden View, Ocean View and Ocean Front. The price gap between Garden View and Ocean Front is roughly KSh 5,000–7,000 per night per couple. For a 4-night stay, the upgrade is real value if you're celebrating something. Garden View rooms are perfectly fine for sleep-only stays.

Diamonds Malindi runs Standard, Junior Suite and Family Suite. The Junior Suites are noticeably bigger than The ONE's Ocean View — better for two adults plus a teenager. The Family Suite layout is the best in the area for parents who want a separate kids' bedroom.

Food & drink

This is where Diamonds pulls ahead for the all-inclusive crowd. The AI plan covers all meals, all drinks (including spirits and house wine), late-afternoon snacks and the evening cocktail bar. You can holiday without ever signing a bill.

The ONE Watamu Bay's all-inclusive includes drinks during meals only — the rest of the day you're paying as you go at the bar. The food itself is excellent (Italian-Swahili fusion is the house style) but the math means a couple drinking 6 cocktails a day will end up paying more at The ONE than at Diamonds, even though the headline rate is lower.

Rule of thumb: if you don't drink much, The ONE half-board is the cheapest holiday. If you do drink, Diamonds AI is the cheapest holiday.

FAQs

Which one has better food?
Subjective, but most repeat clients vote The ONE for food quality and Diamonds for variety/quantity. The Watamu Italian influence shows in the kitchen.

Which one has the better pool?
Diamonds, easily. Two pools and a swim-up bar.

Which is better for kite-surfing?
Neither, really. The kite spot is at Che Shale further north. Both resorts can arrange transfers.

Can I do a 3-night split — 2 nights Watamu, 1 night Malindi?
Yes, and we book it often. The 30-minute transfer between the two is fine. Email us via the homepage for a combo quote.

Are children free?
Both have child policies. Generally kids under 2 are free, 2–12 pay 50% sharing. Ask for the exact 2026 child policy when you enquire — it changes annually.

Pick the one that matches your group, then book direct on the relevant page above. If you're torn, drop us a line from the homepage and we'll quote both with the live 2026 prices.
