A “Diani beach holiday package from Nairobi” can mean almost anything depending on who is selling it. Some packages are airline-and-hotel only. Some are airline-hotel-meals. Some include the airport transfer; some quietly add KSh 4,000 per person at the end. This article shows you what a fair Diani package should actually include in 2026, what the typical hidden charges are, and how to spot a deal that's genuinely cheap versus one that's cheap on paper.

What a real all-in Diani package should cover

For a 5-day, 4-night Diani holiday from Nairobi, a fair 2026 package should include at minimum:

  • Return flights Nairobi–Mombasa or Nairobi–Ukunda (yes, Ukunda has its own airstrip, 5 km from Diani Beach)
  • Airport-to-hotel transfer at both ends
  • 4 nights at a 4-star Diani beach resort
  • Half board (breakfast + dinner) or full board, depending on the tier
  • All government taxes and ecosystem fees

That's the floor. Anything below this is “flights + hotel + your problem” and shouldn't be sold as a package.

Three real package tiers (2026)

Budget (KSh 30,000–42,000 per person, twin sharing)

Domestic flight, 3-star or 3.5-star hotel like Papillon Lagoon Reef or Southern Palms, half board, transfers in shared shuttle. Realistic, no luxury, but a clean, fed, on-the-beach holiday.

Mid-range (KSh 55,000–75,000 per person)

Domestic flight, 4-star resort like Diani Reef or Leopard Beach Resort, half or full board, private transfer, one excursion included. The sweet spot for couples and small families.

All-inclusive premium (KSh 95,000–130,000 per person)

Domestic flight, 4–5 star like Neptune Paradise / Palm Beach, all-inclusive (all meals + drinks all day), private transfer, multiple excursions. Closest to a Maldives-style holiday at a Kenya price.

What honest tour operators do differently

  1. Single-page price. One number on the booking page that already includes flights, transfers, taxes and meals.
  2. Per-person, twin-sharing assumption. Single supplements clearly listed.
  3. The exact hotel named. “A 4-star resort” means “we'll switch you to whichever cheapest option we can find.”
  4. M-Pesa, Pesapal, card. If they only take bank transfer to a personal account, walk away.
  5. Cancellation terms before payment. The penalty schedule should be on the booking page, not in an email after you've paid.

Flight vs train vs road from Nairobi

 TimeCost / personComfort
Flight to Mombasa or Ukunda1 hrKSh 6,000–12,000 each wayHigh
SGR Madaraka Express + transfer4.5 hrsKSh 1,500–3,000 + 2,000 transferHigh — new train
Road (private vehicle)8–9 hrsKSh 12,000–15,000 (vehicle, split)Medium
Overnight bus10–12 hrsKSh 2,500–4,500Low

The SGR is the underrated middle option. KSh 1,500 economy class on the Madaraka Express + a KSh 2,000 transfer to Diani is the cheapest civilised way to get there. Just book the train at least a week ahead in school holidays.

How to combine Diani with Tsavo or Amboseli

The classic 7-night beach & bush itinerary is 3 nights Tsavo East/West or Amboseli, then 4 nights Diani. The drive between Tsavo and Diani is 4–5 hours through the Shimba Hills and onto the south coast — cheaper than flying and the scenery is genuine wild Kenya. We package this as the 14 Days Kenya Safari & Diani for the full experience or our 11-Day Tsavo, Taita Hills & Diani for a shorter version.

For a Diani-only trip, see our tour packages or talk to us for a quick custom quote from the homepage.

Best months to go

Diani is good year-round, but there are nuances:

  • December–March: peak. Hot, sunny, calm reef. Highest prices.
  • April–May: long rains. Hotels half-empty, prices crash 30%, you'll get rained on for an hour a day. Honest answer: still excellent value if you can handle the gambling on weather.
  • June–September: dry, breezy, cooler. Best for kite-surfers up the coast at Che Shale.
  • October–November: short rains. Less aggressive than April–May.

FAQs

Are flights to Mombasa cheaper than to Ukunda?
Usually yes, but you then need a 90-minute road transfer + ferry to Diani. Ukunda is 5 minutes from the beach. Net cost is similar.

Is the Likoni ferry safe?
Yes. Long queues at peak hours but no safety concerns. Most packages avoid it by routing via Ukunda airstrip.

Can I pay with M-Pesa?
Yes, all our packages accept M-Pesa. Most reputable Kenyan operators do.

Can I add an excursion mid-trip?
Yes — the Wasini Dolphin Tour and Shimba Hills game drive can both be added even after you've checked in. Hotel activity desk or your operator can arrange.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Mombasa?
Not for domestic travel. Only if you're entering Kenya from a yellow-fever-risk country.
