What the permit gets you

The gorilla permit covers exactly one trekking event — one hour with one habituated gorilla family on one day. It does not cover park entry on subsequent days, accommodation, food, transport or the porter (KSh 2,000 tip is customary). It does cover:

Bwindi vs Mgahinga — which park?

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest holds about 480 of Uganda's 530 mountain gorillas across four sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo). Each sector has different drive times from Kigali (the closer airport for most Kenyans). Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has a single habituated family and only 8 permits a day, but the volcanic scenery is spectacular.

If this is your first time: Buhoma sector of Bwindi. The trails are well-managed, the drive from Kigali is 4 hours, and the lodge selection is the best.

If you want fewer trekkers: Mgahinga or Rushaga.

When to book and when to go

Three things people get wrong

1. Booking the permit and the hotels separately. The hotels closest to the trekking gate sell out as quickly as the permits. Book together.
2. Underestimating altitude. Bwindi sits at 1,500–2,500 m. Drink water, sleep at the lodge a night before trekking, don't party.
