If you're a Kenyan resident planning to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga in 2026, the permit costs USD 700 per person, must be bought through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a licensed agent, and should be booked at least 4–6 months in advance for the dry season. Below is the practical, no-jargon guide to permit cost, eligibility, the booking process, what the permit actually covers, and how to combine it with Rwanda for the cleanest 7-day Africa-resident gorilla trip.

Permit prices for 2026

Visitor categoryUganda gorilla permit (2026)
Foreign non-resident (most international visitors)USD 800
Foreign resident (East African work / residence permit)USD 700
East African Community citizen (Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian, Rwandan, Burundian, South Sudanese)UGX 300,000 (~USD 80)
Habituation experience (4 hours with gorillas)USD 1,500 / USD 1,000 EA resident / UGX 750,000 EA citizen

Important for Kenyans: the EAC citizen rate of UGX 300,000 is the rate you qualify for as a Kenyan passport holder. That is roughly KSh 11,000 at current exchange rates — this is the headline that most Kenyans don't realise. The USD 700 rate is for non-Kenyans living in East Africa on residence permits.

What the permit gets you

The gorilla permit covers exactly one trekking event — one hour with one habituated gorilla family on one day. It does not cover park entry on subsequent days, accommodation, food, transport or the porter (KSh 2,000 tip is customary). It does cover:

  • Park entry on the day of trekking
  • An armed ranger and tracker team
  • Briefing at the park headquarters
  • The hour with the gorilla family once you find them
  • A trekking certificate (yes, it's a real thing)

How to actually buy a permit

You have two paths:

1. Direct from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA): visit www.ugandawildlife.org, register an account, choose your trekking date and family, pay by card. UWA will email you a permit number. This is the cheapest route — you save the agent fee — but you're responsible for getting yourself to the park headquarters by 7:30 am on trekking day.

2. Through a licensed Kenyan or Ugandan tour operator (recommended): the operator buys the permit on your behalf, picks you up from Kigali or Kampala or Kigali airport, drives you to the park, sorts your accommodation, packs lunches and gets you home. Total package cost for a 7-day trip starts around USD 1,800 per person (KSh 230,000) including the permit, transport, hotels and meals. See our Uganda & Rwanda 7-Day Tour for live prices.

Bwindi vs Mgahinga — which park?

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest holds about 480 of Uganda's 530 mountain gorillas across four sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo). Each sector has different drive times from Kigali (the closer airport for most Kenyans). Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has a single habituated family and only 8 permits a day, but the volcanic scenery is spectacular.

If this is your first time: Buhoma sector of Bwindi. The trails are well-managed, the drive from Kigali is 4 hours, and the lodge selection is the best.

If you want fewer trekkers: Mgahinga or Rushaga.

When to book and when to go

Permits are released 2 years in advance. For 2026, dry season permits (June–September and December–February) sell out 4–6 months ahead. Wet-season permits (March–May and October–November) are easier to find and the parks are less crowded — the rain just makes the trails muddier.

Best month for first-timers: July, August, January or February. Drier trails, cooler hiking conditions.

How fit do I need to be?

The trek can be anything from 1 hour to 8 hours each way depending on which gorilla family you're assigned and where they slept the night before. Trackers radio the rangers in the morning and your group is matched to a family based on a quick fitness assessment. If you tell the ranger you have bad knees, you'll be assigned a family that didn't move far overnight. Be honest at briefing.

Visa & entry for Kenyans

Kenyans don't need a visa for Uganda or Rwanda — just a valid passport with 6+ months validity, yellow fever vaccination certificate (you'll be asked at the border), and proof of return travel. The Uganda–Rwanda border at Cyanika or Katuna is the easiest crossing.

Combining Uganda & Rwanda — recommended itinerary

  • Day 1: Fly Nairobi–Kigali, drive Kigali–Bwindi (4–5 hours) via the Cyanika border
  • Day 2: Trek Bwindi (Buhoma or Rushaga sector), back at lodge by lunch, afternoon at leisure
  • Day 3: Drive to Lake Mburo or Lake Bunyonyi for a relaxed safari/lake day
  • Day 4: Cross back to Rwanda, drive to Volcanoes National Park
  • Day 5: Optional: trek golden monkeys in Volcanoes (USD 100 permit)
  • Day 6: Drive to Kigali, afternoon Genocide Memorial visit, dinner in Kigali
  • Day 7: Fly Kigali–Nairobi

That itinerary is exactly what we package as the Uganda & Rwanda 7-Day Tour — bookable online with the live 2026 price including the permit, all hotels, transport, all meals, park fees and one trek.

Three things people get wrong

  1. Booking the permit and the hotels separately. The hotels closest to the trekking gate sell out as quickly as the permits. Book together.
  2. Underestimating altitude. Bwindi sits at 1,500–2,500 m. Drink water, sleep at the lodge a night before trekking, don't party.
  3. Cheap kit. A waterproof jacket, walking boots and gardening gloves (for nettles) are not negotiable. Borrow if you must, don't skip.

FAQs

Can I get a refund if I'm sick the morning of the trek?
Yes — UWA refunds 50% of the permit if you cannot trek due to illness with a doctor's note. Operators may have stricter terms.

Are kids allowed?
Minimum age is 15. They check passport DOB at the park.

How much should I tip?
USD 10 per ranger, USD 5 per tracker, USD 10 for the porter at Bwindi. Carry small US dollar notes.

Can I trek twice on the same trip?
Yes — many people buy two permits and trek on consecutive days. The second day is easier because you know what to expect.

Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Most operators (us included) won't finalise the booking until you've confirmed insurance covering trekking up to 3,000 m.
