What to know before visiting Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is the world’s most famous safari destination, and it earns that reputation every single day. Stretching across northern Tanzania in a vast expanse of golden grassland, kopje rock formations, and acacia woodland, the park is the heartbeat of the Great Wildebeest Migration and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth. The migration moves in a continuous clockwise loop through the Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. The most dramatic moments happen from January to March in the southern Serengeti, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth in a short window on the open plains of Ndutu. By June and July the herds are in the Western Corridor where they cross the Grumeti River. By August and September they are pushing north towards the Mara River and Kenya. The full cycle means there is always something happening somewhere in the Serengeti regardless of when you visit. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti supports extraordinary numbers of lions, and sightings here are almost guaranteed. Leopards are regularly spotted in the central Seronera area, cheetahs hunt openly on the southern plains, and the park holds one of Africa’s largest elephant populations. The best time to visit depends on your priorities. The dry season from June to October delivers the most reliable game viewing overall, while the January to March period is unbeatable for witnessing the calving season. Getting to the Serengeti involves flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere Airport in Dar es Salaam and then connecting to one of the Serengeti’s internal airstrips. Many visitors combine the Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater on the same itinerary.
